Jacob Merlin

Jacob Merlin: A fresh new band, with a pure styling of funky, jazzy, pop rock. Have you ever wondered what music would be like if you combined James Brown, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, and Radiohead? JMs songs blend these varied influences with personal lyrics and a palpable youthful energy that makes this band’s music original.

The group’s founding member, Jacob Merlin, is a Portland Native who learned to tickle the ivories at the wholesome age of four. Brought up on both classical and jazz standards, Jacob began to develop his music ability in composition, orchestration, and performance throughout his high school years. After graduating, Jacob moved to Nashville and immersed himself in the citys music scene. With a newfound sense of confidence, he returned to Portland to start a band of original funk and rock inspired music. The other Jacob Merlin band members are...

Drummer Jordan Ruback began acquiring his chops by taking lessons at the age of 12. Jordan and Jacob have played in groups together for years, and it's easy to tell when you experience their natural ability to create a pocket groove.

Filling out the rhythm section is bass player Erik Mimnaugh. Eric is a fantastic player who has a background in jazz and classical bass and earned his degree in bass performance. With funky slaptastic lines, Erik’s driving energy fuels the fire of the group.

Michael Suffin, the band’s most experienced member, brings a great energy and incredible talent with his saucy electric guitar skills. Schooled in all areas of rock and jazz, Michael adds a great blend of memorable lead lines and accents to the mix.

Rick Tippets is a well-versed trombone/flugle horn player with enormous skill. He also happens to be Jacob's father and the source of his middle name, Merlin. The name Merlin has been passed down through three generations, making Jacob the fourth firstborn son to share the legacy of musicians with this historical middle name. Sharing in the band's vision, Rick saw the potential of his son's group and signed on. Adding a touch of jazz and funk as well as designing horn parts for three players, Rick brings depth and freshness to JM's catchy tunes.

The Jacob Merlin Band's stage performance is driving and exhilarating, making it hard not get up, let loose, and dance. At the same time Jacob Merlin's lyrics will make you want to listen intently to what this singer/songwriter has to say.
